• THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR TO ZAMBIA MR. LI JIE;
• SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS PRESENT;
• THE VICE-CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA, PROFESSOR LUKE MBEWE;
• DISTINGUISHED GUESTS;
• MEMBERS OF THE PRESS;
• LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

I AM DELIGHTED AND HONOURED TO BE HERE TODAY, TO FLAG OFF THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF 13 MILLING PLANTS IN VARIOUS DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY UNDER THE PRESIDENTIAL MILLING PLANTS INITIATIVE.

THIS IS A GREAT MILESTONE IN THE ACTUALISATION OF THE PATRIOTIC FRONT GOVERNMENT’S PRO-POOR POLICY AIMED AT ENSURING THAT THE LIVES OF THE MAJORITY OF OUR PEOPLE IN THE RURAL AREAS ARE BEARABLE.

I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT THE CONSTRUCTION WORKS OF THE MILLING PLANTS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN TWO PHASES AND WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY CHINA MACHINERY INDUSTRY CONSTRUCTION GROUP INCORPORATED.

UNDER PHASE ONE OF THIS PROJECT, THREE MILLING PLANTS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED INCLUDING THE ONE TO BE PUT UP RIGHT HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION CENTRE.

THE OTHER TWO HAVE BEEN EARMARKED FOR MONZE DISTRICT IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE AND MPIKA DISTRICT IN MUCHINGA PROVINCE.

MY GOVERNMENT, YOUR GOVERNMENT, THE PATRIOTIC FRONT GOVERNMENT, BEING A PRO-POOR GOVERNMENT, HAS PRIORITISED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE MILLING PLANTS IN RURAL AREAS TO MITIGATE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES FACED BY OUR PEOPLE IN ACCESSING MAIZE PRODUCTS
CURRENTLY, MOST MAIZE MILLING COMPANIES ARE LOCATED ALONG THE LINE OF RAIL. STATISTICS INDICATE THAT OUT OF ABOUT FIFTY MILLING PLANTS DOTTED ACROSS THE COUNTRY, OVER THIRTY-NINE ARE IN CITIES AND TOWNS.

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS;
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

WE CAN NOT CONTINUE TO DENY OUR PEOPLE SUCH FACILITIES ON ACCOUNT OF THE AREAS WHERE THEY LIVE.

THEREFORE, GOVERNMENT HAS PUT IN PLACE THIS INITIATIVE TO TAKE THE PRODUCTION OF MEALIE MEAL AND STOCK FEED TO THE DOOR STEP OF THE SUBSISTENCE FARMER, WHO IS THE MAJOR PRODUCER OF MAIZE IN THE COUNTRY.

DESPITE THE SUBSISTENCE FARMER’S HARD WORK TO PRODUCE THE MAIZE, IT IS SAD TO NOTE THAT HE OR SHE ACCESSES MEALIE MEAL AND STOCK FEED AT A VERY HIGH PRICE. THIS IS AFTER THE MAIZE PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED IN MILLING PLANTS SITUATED IN URBAN AREAS. THIS TREND HAS TO BE REVERSED!

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT ONCE COMPLETED THE MILLING PLANTS WILL ACCRUE IMMENSE BENEFITS TO OUR RURAL COMMUNITIES.

OTHER THAN REDUCING THE COST OF PRODUCTION FOR OUR STAPLE FOOD, THE POSITIONING OF THE MILLING PLANTS IN SOME OF THE RURAL AREAS WILL CREATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE WHO WILL BE EMPLOYED TO WORK IN THE PLANTS.

IT IS MY SINCERE HOPE THAT OVER TIME, THE SKILLS OBTAINED BY THE LOCAL PEOPLE THROUGH TRANSFER OF BOTH TECHNOLOGICAL AND OPERATIONAL KNOW-HOW FROM OUR PARTNERS, WILL NOT ONLY ENHANCE MEALIE MEAL PRODUCTION, BUT ALSO FOSTER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN AREAS WHERE THE PLANTS WILL BE BUILT.

IN ADDITION, THE MILLING PLANTS WILL OFFER AN ALTERNATIVE READY MARKET FOR THE MAIZE WHICH IS PRODUCED IN THE RESPECTIVE AREAS. THIS WILL RESOLVE THE CHALLENGE OF OUR PEOPLE LOOKING FAR AND WIDE FOR A MARKET FOR THEIR PRODUCTS.

TRANSPORT COSTS WILL ULTIMATELY REDUCE MAKING MEALIE MEAL AND OTHER MAIZE PRODUCTS AFFORDABLE TO THE COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE VICINITY OF MILLING PLANTS.

THE MILLING PLANT TO BE CONSTRUCTED AT THIS SITE WILL ALSO BE A TRAINING FACILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCE WHO WILL BE WORKING IN MILLING PLANTS IN THE COUNTRY. THIS WILL RESULT IN INCREASED EFFICIENCY OF PERSONNEL WORKING IN THE MILLING INDUSTRY ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

THOSE WHO WILL BE TRAINED HERE WILL SHARE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WITH THEIR COLLEAGUES IN OTHER MILLING FACILITIES IN THE COUNTRY.

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS;
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

I AM HAPPY TO NOTE THAT THE THREE PLANTS TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN THE FIRST PHASE WILL HAVE A COMBINED MAXIMUM PRODUCTION CAPACITY OF 520 TONNES PER DAY TRANSLATING INTO 10,400 BY 25 KILOGRAMME BAGS OF MEALIE MEAL PER DAY. THE PLANTS WILL ALSO TAKE APPROXIMATELY 21 MONTHS TO BECOME OPERATIONAL.

OUT OF THE 13 MILLING PLANTS WHICH WILL BE CONSTRUCTED UNDER THE PRESIDENTIAL MILLING PLANT INITIATIVE, SIX (06) WILL BE MANAGED BY THE ZAMBIA NATIONAL SERVICE.

IT IS HOPED THAT THEIR DISCIPLINE, PROFESSIONALISM AND CAPABILITY TO OPERATE IN ANY TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT, WILL SURELY TRIGGER ECONOMIC GROWTH AND ASSIST GOVERNMENT TO ATTAIN STABILITY IN THE PRICING OF THE NATION’S STAPLE FOOD.

THE 13 MILLING PLANTS WHOSE CONSTRUCTION I AM LAUNCHING TODAY WILL BE LOCATED IN KAOMA-WESTERN PROVINCE, MONZE AND MAZABUKA-SOUTHERN PROVINCE, CHIPATA-EASTERN PROVINCE, MPIKA-MUCHINGA PROVINCE, AND SOLWEZI-NORTH WESTERN PROVINCE.
OTHER PLANTS WILL BE SITUATED IN MUMBWA AND KAPIRI MPOSHI-CENTRAL PROVINCE, LUANSHYA AND KALULUSHI-COPPERBELT PROVINCE, MANSA-LUAPULA PROVINCE, CHONGWE-LUSAKA PROVINCE AND KASAMA IN NORTHERN PROVINCE.

TO THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT WHO WILL PARTNER WITH US ON THIS PROJECT, ON BEHALF OF THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT, THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA AND INDEED ON MY OWN BEHALF, I WISH TO SINCERELY THANK YOU FOR THIS PARTNERSHIP.

IT IS ALWAYS COMFORTING TO BE ASSURED THAT IN YOU WE HAVE AN ALL WEATHER-FRIEND. LET US CONTINUE WITH THIS LONG TIME FRIENDSHIP FOR THE GOOD OF OUR PEOPLES.

MY GOVERNMENT IS RESOLVED TO ADDRESSING DISCREPANCIES IN THE MEALIE MEAL PRICE WHICH ARE EVIDENT ESPECIALLY IN OUR COUNTRY’S RURAL AREAS.

WE ARE ALSO COMMITTED TO RENDERING NECESSARY SUPPORT TO YOU THE PROJECT IMPLEMENTERS TO ENSURE THAT THIS LIFE CHANGING PROJECT IS DELIVERED WITHIN THE STIPULATED TIME FRAME.

THERE IS NO REASON AT ALL FOR THE MEALIE MEAL PRICE TO REMAIN HIGH WHEN MAIZE IS LOCALLY PRODUCED.

THEREFORE, WITH THIS PROJECT, WE EXPECT MORE BENEFITS TO ACCRUE TO OUR PEOPLE. IT IS IN OUR INTEREST TO ENSURE THAT WE ELIMINATE HUNGER ESPECIALLY AMONG OUR HARD WORKING BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN RURAL AREAS.

THE PATRIOTIC FRONT GOVERNMENT WILL NOT SHIFT FROM ITS PRO-POOR POLICIES AS THIS IS THE MANDATE UPON WHICH WE WERE PUT INTO POWER BY THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE.

OUR COMMITMENT TO CHANGING THE FACE OF THIS COUNTRY IS ALSO EVIDENT IN THE INNUMERABLE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS WHICH WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED AND ARE STILL DOING SO.

WITH THESE REMARKS, IT IS NOW MY SINGULAR HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE TO DECLARE THE CONSTRUCTION OF MILLING PLANTS UNDER THE PRESIDENTIAL MILLING PLANTS INITIATIVE OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND OUR COUNTRY,

I THANK YOU.

MR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA,

ON THE RE-OPENING OF MUNALI NICKEL MINE
TUESDAY, 16TH APRIL, 2019, MAZABUKA

STATE HOUSE
LUSAKA

• HON. MINISTER OF MINES AND MINERALS DEVELOPMENT: MR. RICHARD MUSUKWA, MP;
• HON. MINISTER OF HEALTH, DR. CHITALU CHILUFYA, MP;
• HON. MINISTER OF SOUTHERN PROVINCE, DR. EDIFY HAMUKALE, MP;
• SENIOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS;
• YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS CHIEF NALUWAAMA;
• YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS CHIEF MWANACHINGWALA;
• YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS CHIEF HANJALIKA;
• YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS CHIEFTAINESS MWENDA;
• BOARD CHAIRPERSON, MABIZA RESOURCES LIMITED, MR. VALENTINE CHITALU;
• CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, CONSOLIDATED NICKEL MINES, MR. SIMON PURKISS;
• GENERAL MANAGER, MABIZA RESOURCES LIMITED, MR. MATHEW BANDA;
• DISTINGUISHED GUESTS;
• MEMBERS OF THE PRESS;
• LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

I AM PLEASED TO BE PART OF THOSE WITNESSING THE RESUMPTION OF OPERATIONS AT MUNALI NICKEL MINE, WHICH HAS BEEN ON CARE AND MAINTENANCE SINCE 2011.

THE REOPENING OF THIS MINE IS A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT WHICH DEMONSTRATES THAT THE INVESTMENT CLIMATE IN ZAMBIA IS STILL CONDUCIVE FOR WELL-MEANING INVESTORS.

FOR THIS REASON, I COMMEND MUNALI NICKEL MINES MANAGEMENT FOR YOUR RESILIENCE AND COMMITMENT TO REVIVE THIS FIRST-EVER NICKEL MINE IN THE COUNTRY.

I ALSO WISH TO COMMEND THE TRADITIONAL LEADERS AND THE COMMUNITY LIVING AROUND THIS AREA FOR YOUR COOPERATION AND SUPPORT TO THIS INVESTMENT. WITHOUT THAT, WHAT WE ARE WITNESSING TODAY WOULD NOT HAVE COME TO FRUITION.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

MINING HAS FOR A LONG TIME BEEN ZAMBIA’S KEY ECONOMIC DRIVER ACCOUNTING FOR MUCH OF THE FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT.

SINCE THE PRIVATISATION OF THE MINES IN 2000, APPROXIMATELY US$13.13 BILLION HAS BEEN INVESTED IN THE SECTOR.

WITH THE INCREASE IN FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT, OPERATIONS WHICH WERE NEAR CLOSURE WERE REVIVED, MINE LIFE EXTENDED, GREENFIELD MINES WERE OPENED AND MINERAL PRODUCTION INCREASED.

HOWEVER, THE INVESTMENT INFLOWS IN THE MINING SECTOR HAVE NOT RESULTED IN THE GROWTH OF OTHER SECTORS, AND THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN
MY GOVERNMENT IS WORKING TO CHANGE THIS SCENARIO.

TO THIS EFFECT, DURING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SEVENTH NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN, MEASURES TO ENHANCE LINKAGES WITH OTHER SECTORS, AND TO INCREASE LOCAL PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION IN THE MINERAL VALUE CHAIN WILL BE IMPLEMENTED.

OUR FOCUS IS ON ENSURING THAT MINING CONTRIBUTES TO THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION, DOMESTIC REVENUE GENERATION AND JOB CREATION.

THE PATRIOTIC FRONT HAS CONTINUED TO CREATE A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT AIMED AT TRANSFORMING THE MINING SECTOR.

THIS MINE, LIKE ALL OTHER MINES IN THE COUNTRY, HAS VAST ECONOMIC POTENTIAL WHICH MUST BE TRANSFORMED INTO TANGIBLE ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO TRICKLE DOWN TO THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE.

AS A GOVERNMENT, WE ARE AWARE THAT TRANSFORMING OUR MINERAL WEALTH INTO SOCIO-ECONOMIC BENEFITS REQUIRES PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PRIVATE SECTOR, AND THAT IS PRECISELY WHAT WE ARE DOING.

I AM AWARE THAT THE RE-OPENING OF MUNALI NICKEL MINE HAS CREATED 400 DIRECT JOBS FOR ZAMBIANS. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS WILL IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES.

WE ARE OPTIMISTIC THAT THIS MINE WILL CREATE MORE BENEFITS THROUGH GENERATION OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES IN THE COUNTRY.

TO ACHIEVE THIS, I URGE THE MINE TO PRIORITISE ZAMBIAN COMPANIES AND PRODUCTS, WHEN IT COMES TO PROCUREMENTS, AS A WAY OF SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL BUSINESSES.

AS A COMPANY, YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO ASSIST LOCAL BUSINESSES TO BUILD THEIR CAPACITY TO MEET YOUR STANDARDS, THEREBY EXPANDING THEIR BUSINESSES.

I ALSO URGE MUNALI NICKEL MINE AND OTHER MINING FIRMS IN THE COUNTRY TO PARTNER WITH VARIOUS SKILLS TRAINING INSTITUTIONS IN ORDER TO ENSURE A SKILLS MATCH BETWEEN TRAINING AND INDUSTRIAL NEEDS.

MY GOVERNMENT IS IN FULL SUPPORT OF SUCH INVESTMENT PROJECTS. THEREFORE, WE ARE COMMITTED TO THE PROMOTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A GOOD FISCAL REGIME, WHICH WILL NOT ONLY ENHANCE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE MINING SECTOR, BUT ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO ITS GROWTH.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
GOVERNMENT WILL CONTINUE TO FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MINING SECTOR THROUGH THE PROVISION OF TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURE.

TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURE PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOT ONLY THE MINING SECTOR BUT EQUALLY OTHER SECTORS IN THE COUNTRY.

IN AN EFFORT TO ENSURE THAT THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY PARTAKE OF THE MINE’S SUCCESS, I URGE YOU TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A SUSTAINABLE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGY, WHICH WILL DIRECTLY RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES AROUND THE MINE.

IT WILL BE DISAPPOINTING TO LEARN THAT WHILE THE MINE IS YIELDING PROFITS, ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITY REMAINS IN ITS POOR STATE IN TERMS OF PROVISION OF SOCIAL SERVICES.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY WILL NOT ONLY ENHANCE THE COMPANY’S IMAGE PROFILE, BUT WILL ALSO MAKE THE MINING BENEFITS TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES MORE VISIBLE.
I AM CONFIDENT THAT THE MINE WILL IN NO TIME IMPROVE ITS FINANCIAL POSITION AND RE-ESTABLISH IT’S POSITION IN THE COUNTRY IN PARTICULAR, AND THE REGION IN GENERAL.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

TODAY, I AM EXCITED TO FLAG OFF THE FIRST TRUCKS OF NICKEL AND PLATINUM GROUP OF MINERAL CONCENTRATES FOR EXPORT. THIS SIGNIFIES GROWTH IN OUR COUNTRY’S DOMESTIC PRODUCT.

AS I CONCLUDE, I WISH TO UNDERSCORE THE NEED FOR GOVERNMENT AND NICKEL MINE TO CONTINUE BEING PARTNERS TO CONTINUE IMPROVING THE LIVES OF OUR PEOPLE.

AS GOVERNMENT, WE WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN AN OPEN-DOOR POLICY, TO LISTEN AND DIALOGUE ON MATTERS OF MUTUAL INTEREST.

GOING FORWARD, OUR DESIRE IS TO SEE THE MINING COMPANY AND ITS EMPLOYEES COMPLY WITH THE RULES GOVERNING THE INDUSTRY. THERE IS ALSO NEED FOR MUTUAL RESPECT BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE INVESTORS.

I WISH MUNALI NICKEL MINE SUCCESS IN ALL ITS ENDEAVOURS.

I AM HOPEFUL THAT THE MINE WILL LIVE TO THE EXPECTATIONS OF ALL ZAMBIANS AND ESPECIALLY THE COMMUNITY AROUND THIS AREA.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL,
I THANK YOU.

SPEECH TO BE DELIVERED BY
HIS EXCELLENCY MR EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA
DURING THE 15THANNUAL FUNDRAISING WALK
FOR CHESHIRE HOME SOCIETY OF ZAMBIA, CHAWAMA, LUSAKA
ON SATURDAY, 13TH APRIL 2019

• THE CHAIRPERSON CHESHIRE HOMES SOCIETY OF ZAMBIA CHAWAMA;
• THE DIRECTOR GENERAL NATIONAL PENSIONS AUTHORITY;
• THE DEPUTY GOVERNOR OPERATIONS BANK OF ZAMBIA;
• THE NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON CHESHIRE HOMES SOCIETY OF ZAMBIA;
• ZNS COMMANDANT REPRESENTATIVE;
• ZAF COMMANDER REPRESENTATIVE;
• DIPLOMATIC CLUB;
• GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS PRESENT;
• PARISH PRIEST CHAWAMA;
• HEAD OF CHESHIRE HOME, CHAWAMA;
• MEMBERS OF THE PRESS;
• DISTINGUISHED GUESTS;
• LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

AT THE ONSET I WISH TO EXTEND MY GRATITUDE FOR INVITING ME TO GRACE THIS 15TH ANNUAL FUNDRAISING WALK UNDER THE THEME: “CELEBRATING AGING IN THE FAMILY AND IN THE COMMUNITY”.

IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO BE PART OF THIS WALK AGAIN, AFTER BEING WITH YOU LAST YEAR DURING ANOTHER FUNDRAISER AIMED AT MOBILISING FUNDS FOR RUNNING THIS HOME.

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT IT IS NOT EASY FOR ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS TO EXTEND A GIVING HAND. HOWEVER, I WISH TO ENCOURAGE ALL STAKEHOLDERS ON THE NEED TO DONATE TOWARDS THE RUNNING OF THIS HOME.

IT IS OUR GOD-GIVEN RESPONSIBILITY TO LOOK AFTER THE VULNERABLE AMONG THEM THE SENIOR CITIZENS, CHILDREN AND WOMEN.

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO HOPE OF A MEAL, ACCOMMODATION AND ANY CARE. HOW CAN WE THEN BE COMFORTABLE IN OUR COMFORT ZONES IN THE MIDST OF ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO NEED OUR HELP? CERTAINLY, WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

MR CHAIRPERSON:
I AM INFORMED THAT THIS YEAR MARKS 27 YEARS SINCE THIS HOME WAS OPENED. THIS IS A BIG ACHIEVEMENT AND CONGRATULATIONS!

WITHOUT THIS HOME A NUMBER OF THOSE IN NEED WOULD NOT HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE CARED FOR. WE NEED MORE OF SUCH GENUINE HOMES TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THOSE WHO ARE LESS PRIVILEDGED.

AS A NATION WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT NATIONAL VALUES AND PRINCIPLES AND I RECKON THAT THIS DOES NOT MERELY APPEAL TO OUR GOOD CHARACTER AS CITIZENS, BUT EQUALLY, TO THE WAY WE TREAT THOSE WHO ARE IN NEED IN SOCIETY.

GOOD VALUES ALSO ENTAIL THAT WE TAKE UP THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TAKING CARE OF OUR AGED RELATIVES AND THOSE WHO ARE VULNERABLE. IT IS MORALLY WRONG FOR US TO ABANDON THE AGED IN SOCIETY.

IT IS SAD TO NOTE THAT TODAY WE NO LONGER EMBRACE THE VALUE OF THE EXTENDED FAMILY. THE EXTENDED FAMILY SYSTEM IS BROKEN DOWN.

MOST OF US HERE ARE WHERE WE ARE TODAY BECAUSE OF THE EXTENDED FAMILY. SOME OF US MAY NOT HAVE ACQUIRED EDUCATION TO PROPEL US TO WHERE WE ARE NOW, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE EXTENDED FAMILY.

MOREOVER, IN THE AFRICAN CULTURE, EVERYONE HAS A RELATIVE. HOWEVER, THE CHALLENGE TODAY IS THAT FAMILIES AND INDEED COMMUNITIES ARE SHUNNING AWAY FROM THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LOOKING AFTER THOSE WHO ARE DESTITUTE, HENCE WE SEE SUCH STRUCTURES AS CHESHIRE HOMES.

THE MEANING OF FAMILY HAS NOW BEEN RESTRICTED TO NUCLEAR SET UP. THIS HAS RESULTED IN OUR SENIOR CITIZENS OR ORPHANS HAVING NO ONE TO LOOK AFTER THEM.

TODAY, WE CAN EVEN TALK ABOUT ORPHANS BECAUSE SOCIETY HAS ABANDONED THE VALUE OF LOOKING AFTER THESE VULNERABLE CHILDREN.

WE MUST REVISIT OUR FAMILY VALUES AND ONCE AGAIN BUILD A CULTURE OF LOVING AND CARING FOR ONE ANOTHER. OUR SOCIETY WOULD HAVE NO DESTITUTE SENIOR CITIZENS, IF OUR FAMILIES WERE LOVING AND CARING.

WE HAVE DRIFTED AWAY FROM OUR CULTURE OF EMBRACING FAMILY VALUES WHICH INCLUDE ENSURING THAT EVERYONE LIVES WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE FAMILY SET UP. WE SHOULD NOT BE PROUD TO LEAVE OUR PARENTS IN CARE HOMES WHEN WE ARE STILL ALIVE. IT IS INDEED SAD!

THE BEMBA PEOPLE HAVE SAID AND I QUOTE:
MAYO MPAPA NAINE NKAKUPAPA! END OF QUOTE.

THIS IS SIMPLY A CALL TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE AND INDEED EVERYONE THAT WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO LOOK AFTER OUR AGED PARENTS, THE SAME WAY THEY NURTURED US TO BE WHO WE ARE IN SOCIETY.

THEREFORE, SUCH HOMES LIKE CHESHIRE SHOULD ONLY BE FOR THOSE WHO ARE REALLY VULNERABLE, BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO RELATIVES AND NO MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD.

I THEREFORE CALL UPON EACH ONE OF YOU FELLOW ZAMBIANS TO SERIOUSLY TAKE UP THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN RELATIVES AND THOSE OUTSIDE OUR OWN FAMILIES, BUT ARE VULNERABLE.

I WISH TO APPEAL TO ALL OF YOU GATHERED HERE TO RENDER YOUR SUPPORT TO THIS HOME TO ENABLE IT RUN EFFECTIVELY. GOD DELIGHTS IN OUR GIVING. 2 CORINTHIANS 9 VERSE 7 SAYS:
“SO LET EACH ONE GIVE AS HE PURPOSES IN HIS HEART, NOT GRUDGINGLY OR OF NECESSITY; FOR GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER.”

THIS HOME HAS VARIOUS EXPENSES WHICH INCLUDE TRANSPORTATION OF PATIENTS TO HOSPITAL HENCE THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE TRANSPORT, REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE INCLUDING ELECTRICITY BILLS. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO THE TOTAL EXPENDITURE OF A MINIMUM OF K1, 500.00 PER DAY.

I WISH TO COMMEND THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN SUPPORTING THIS HOME WITH YOUR UNWAVERING COMMITMENT, PLEASE CONTINUE BECAUSE THIS HOME RELIES ON YOU.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
LET ME APPEAL TO ALL OF YOU BEFORE LEAVING THIS PLACE TO ENSURE THAT YOU DONATE GENEROUSLY, AND MAKE PLEDGES TO THE HOME, WHICH SHOULD BE FULFILLED WITHOUT FAIL.
AS I END, LET ME THANK THE CHESHIRE MANAGEMENT BOARD FOR YOUR EFFORTS TOWARDS IMPROVING THE LIVES OF OUR SENIOR CITIZENS. GOD BLESS YOU ALL, I THANKYOU.
