“Little Man Wee” Adorned in Basotho Finery: Lesotho and Zambia Strengthen Cultural Ties in Brussels

BRUSSELS – In a celebration of cultural diplomacy, Zambia’s Ambassador to Brussels, Her Excellency Mary Chirwa, joined her counterpart from the Kingdom of Lesotho, Her Excellency Mantoetsi Liteboho Mohatonyane, for a special occasion. The two ambassadors were present as Lesotho donated its iconic Basotho blanket to the famous Manneken Pis statue, a beloved symbol of Brussels.

The event, supported by the Municipality and Mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, featured a walk from the Hotel Amigo to the statue. Manneken Pis, a small bronze statue of a boy urinating into a fountain, is a popular tourism attraction and emblem of Brussels’ humorous and cultural spirit.

This donation is a significant gesture of cultural diplomacy between Lesotho and Belgium, as well as the European Union. The Basotho blanket and conical Mokorotlo straw hat will adorn the statue, built in 1619, showcasing Lesotho’s rich cultural heritage. This event highlights the strong bond between Lesotho and Brussels, promoting cultural exchange and recognition.

The Zambia’s Ambassador truly underscores the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering relationships between nations. This event demonstrates the power of cultural exchange in building bridges of friendship between countries and also promoting cultural tourism.
